Teaching English in San Luis Potosi, Mexicomexico

Report submitted on 14 Feb, 2016 by Estelle

Teaching English in San Luis Potosi, Mexico:

How can teachers find teaching jobs in San Luis Potosi, Mexico?
I think a lot of it is word of mouth. I found my position through a website listing job opportunities.

The main English teaching jobs available are:
Full time English language school positions, part time English language school positions, teaching at colleges / universities, teaching at companies, teaching at community centers, etc., private teaching (not through a school, agency, etc.)

What are the minimum teaching requirements?
Native English speaker, TESOL (or related certificate is nice but not required by all). Some positions require teaching experience.

What teaching requirements would you recommend?
TESOL/TEFL certification; experience teaching is useful.

What are the levels of payment?
$40 pesos (approx. US$2)/hour.

How many teaching days a week is normal?
5 days per week.

How many face-to-face teaching hours a week is normal?
25 hours per week.

What is the normal arrangement for holidays?
Do not work federal holidays.

What advice would you give to someone considering coming to San Luis Potosi, Mexico to teach English?
It is an adventure and a new experience. Bring an open mind and a desire to experience a new culture. The people are friendly and warm but few speak English.

What are the positive aspects of teaching English in San Luis Potosi, Mexico?
The students want to learn. I have students from beginner to advanced and all are very appreciative of your teaching them English.

What are the negative aspects for teaching English in San Luis Potosi, Mexico?
Limited resources/materials. It is great to have so many online resources to reference, assuming you have Internet access.

What are some of the teaching challenges for English teachers teaching the local people in your area?
Limited supplies. Internet not always reliable (not fast anyways).

Living in San Luis Potosi, Mexico:

Are there any visa or other legal requirements to live in Mexico?
Must have a visa to work in the country (bring your patience as it is not a quick process).

What is the cost of living like in Mexico?
Rent accommodations are available for as little as $100 USD/month but average is probably about $150USD for room in a shared house (common living/cooking areas).

What are the usual accommodation arrangements and how can you find accommodation?
My school helped find initial accommodations (first 30 days) but it is up to the individual to make arrangements beyond that. It helps to speak at least basic Spanish when inquiring about accommodation options. Very few people speak English here.

Other than teaching, what positive aspects are there for living in San Luis Potosi, Mexico?
Beautiful colonial city. Friendly people. Lots of fresh produce for very inexpensive meals.

Other than teaching, what negative aspects are there for living in San Luis Potosi, Mexico?
The infrastructure is not always the greatest. The streets flood during heavy rains. There is an extensive bus system but it does not run on a schedule. Daily living is different so keep an open mind.

What advice would you give to someone considering coming to San Luis Potosi, Mexico?
Enjoy. It is a new experience with lots of rewards to those who stick to it.

What things do you miss most (other than family and friends) from your home country?
Not much. I loved Starbucks but there are good local coffee shops. I shopped frequently at local shops — they are plentiful here. Banking is not as convenient here (keep an online account in US).

What do you think you will miss most when (or if) you leave Mexico?
Not planning to return to US. When move to another country, it will be the friends I have made here.

What things would you recommend to new teachers in your area to bring with them from their home country?
Patience! Any supplies for teaching that you can acquire are helpful but you learn to be resourceful.

Any other comments (about teaching or living in your country)?
I am thoroughly enjoying my experience teaching abroad and hope to continue for several years.

Teaching English in Alcázar de San Juan, Spain

Report submitted on 3 Feb, 2016 by Eoghan Mc Monagle.

Teaching English in Alcázar de San Juan, Spain:

How can teachers find teaching jobs in Alcázar de San Juan, Spain?
Internet.

The main English teaching jobs available are:
Full time English language school positions, part time English language school positions, agencies (send teachers to different locations), teaching at companies, private teaching (not through a school, agency, etc.).

What are the minimum teaching requirements?
Native speakers are preferred. Normally a C1 to work in private language centres and bilingual secondary schools. B2 for all primary schools.

What teaching requirements would you recommend?
TEFL/TESOL/CELTA qualification and experience in teaching children.

What are the levels of payment?
It depends on the city and type of employment. 1 to 1 classes can range from €8 (approx. US$9) per hour in small towns to €20-25 (approx. US$22 – US$28) per hour in bigger cities. A full time schedule (24 hours contact times) is usually €1100 (US$1235) per month gross.

How many teaching days a week is normal?
5 days per week.

How many face-to-face teaching hours a week is normal?
24 hours per week.

What is the normal arrangement for holidays?
School holidays.

What advice would you give to someone considering coming to Alcázar de San Juan, Spain to teach English?
Go for it! When applying for jobs, read the requirements carefully and adapt your cover letter/CV to the job you are applying for.
If you want to also learn the language, then live with other people from the area/country.
Be aware that a lot of people will try to be your friend to get “free” English language exchanges.
Try and immerse yourself in the lifestyle there and avoid going home too often. It takes away from the experience. Make the most of your time and travel around the country. It is very easy to travel in Spain and your salary will allow you to do it.

What are the positive aspects of teaching English in Alcázar de San Juan, Spain?
The people are friendly and welcoming. EVERYONE wants to speak in English and they are aware that Spain has a low level of English. They generally respond well to conversation based classes meaning it is easier for native teachers. Grammar is taught well in school so conversation and pronunciation is the very important to them. They have very inquisitive minds and respond well to foreign teachers

What are the negative aspects for teaching English in Alcázar de San Juan, Spain?
The Spanish have extreme difficulty in certain pronunciation aspects. This is due to the fact that a lot of the sounds simply don’t exist in their language and also they have been taught incorrectly in the past. Most people think for example that the “l” in “walk”, “talk”, “should”, “could” is pronounced because of the way they were taught in the past.

What are some of the teaching challenges for English teachers teaching the local people in your area?
The children and adults expect you to speak Spanish and the parents of the children will always try to speak to you in Spanish personally… this is especially true in small towns where the parents are more friendly and like to get to know you more.
As an employer it is difficult to find native English speakers.

Living in Alcázar de San Juan, Spain:

Are there any visa or other legal requirements to live in Spain?
You have to be an EU citizen or have permission to work in the EU.

What is the cost of living like in Spain?
If you flat-share you can expect to pay €300 to €400 (approx. US$337 – US$450) in Madrid and Barcelona. In other smaller towns €100-150 (approx. US$112 – US$168). To live on your own €300-500 (approx. US$337 – US$561). Daily necessities are a lot cheaper than English-speaking countries.

What are the usual accommodation arrangements and how can you find accommodation?
I found it myself on the internet. I started sharing a house with a family and then rented a flat on my own and then bought my own house.

Other than teaching, what positive aspects are there for living in Alcázar de San Juan, Spain?
The lifestyle is amazing, relaxed and people are very welcoming.

Other than teaching, what negative aspects are there for living in Alcázar de San Juan, Spain?
The bureaucracy is unreal. Getting registered to be able to work is daunting. You have to get a NIE (you have to do this), social security number (which your employer should do), open a bank account (not that easy). People tend to prefer going out to crowded bars to meet up rather than meeting at someone’s home for a quiet dinner and drinks.

What advice would you give to someone considering coming to Alcázar de San Juan, Spain?
Book an appointment in advance to get your NIE, don’t come out a week before your job starts, it is too much stress and your first week working will be awful. Try and book appointments to view flats/houses, etc., before you get here. Ask your employer if they can help looking for accommodation.

What things do you miss most (other than family and friends) from your home country?
Nothing.

What do you think you will miss most when (or if) you leave Spain?
I won’t leave. I have my business set up here.

What things would you recommend to new teachers in your area to bring with them from their home country?
Tea, if you’re English. To be honest, I adapted really well here and didn’t miss anything or need anything.

Teaching English in Japan – Nara

Teaching English in Nara, Japan

nara-japan

Report submitted on 4 Jan, 2016 by byond.

Teaching English in Nara, Japan:

How can teachers find teaching jobs in Nara, Japan?
I worked first at a private women’s university in Osaka for 38 years. After retirement I went to work at a language school teaching children. I would suggest that teachers check job sites online and also newspapers for available jobs. Other possibilities are checking with people they might know who are living in the country/area that they wish to go.

The main English teaching jobs available are:
Full time English language school positions, part time English language school positions, agencies (send teachers to different locations), teaching at companies, teaching at community centers, etc., private teaching (not through a school, agency, etc.)

What are the minimum teaching requirements?
If the candidate is looking for a position at a university, then a PhD is often required these days. At least an M.A. is necessary. University jobs are hard to come by these days. If the person is looking at language schools, then a B.A. may be all that its required. The JET program is still a fairly good way to get experience in Japan.

What teaching requirements would you recommend?
I recommend at least a B.A., some ESL training if not an actual degree and at least a little experience.

What are the levels of payment?
It of course depends on the place but the average is about 2,500 to 3,000 yen per hour (approximately $20-25/hour).
With the high cost of living in Japan, it’s often hard to make ends meet.

How many teaching days a week is normal?
5 – 6 days per week.

How many face-to-face teaching hours a week is normal?
18 hours per week.

What is the normal arrangement for holidays?
All national holidays are usually off. If the job is part-time, you are not paid for holidays.

What advice would you give to someone considering coming to Nara, Japan to teach English?
It’s a nice, safe place to get experience if you don’t mind crowds, noise, high prices and language barriers.

Teaching English in Gap ming, China

ming-gap, china

Report submitted on 6 Dec, 2015 by Sonya McGriff.

Teaching English in Gap ming, China:

How can teachers find teaching jobs in Gap ming, China?
Go to your browser at the top of your computer and type teaching abroad.

The main English teaching jobs available are:
Full time English language school positions.

What are the minimum teaching requirements?
You will need at least a BA preferably in English, or any field preference in the education field, with a CELTA or any TEFL 120 hour certificate.

What teaching requirements would you recommend?
You will need at least a BA preferably in English, with a CELTS or any TEFL 120 hour certificate, and if you have a background in Math and Physics you will find many jobs in that field. If you are certified in your field that makes a huge difference in salary. If you only have a BA and you would like to teach don’t be discouraged there are a few jobs you can get with just a BA but you must look for them. As anywhere the more credentials the better the job salary and position.

What are the levels of payment?
Not by hour by month, you get paid once a month , then you can break it down and do the math. The pay can start as low as 400 RMB (approx. US$ 62) to 25,000 RMB (approx. US$ 3,800) per month. Some jobs can be higher but it goes back to experience and education and what region.

How many teaching days a week is normal?
5 days per week.

How many face-to-face teaching hours a week is normal?
25 hours per week.

What is the normal arrangement for holidays?
If you are in an international school all the same American holidays plus Chinese, I recommend this type even though I don’t work for an international school, because it lessens your chance of homesickness, you get to travel more, and above all you tend to love your job, you stay longer and you get more time to travel and go back home if you like or study to obtain more credentials.

What advice would you give to someone considering coming to Gap ming, China to teach English?
Be open minded, know what you want and looking for, (for example do I want to live in a big city or small city, do I want to work with small kids or big kids etc.) research your company and what’s around it and be ready to have fun.

What are the positive aspects of teaching English in Gap ming, China?
You get to meet people from another culture, you get experience working in your field in another country, travel to locations you never been before, meet amazing kids.

What are the negative aspects for teaching English in Gap ming, China?
If you’re not at a certain type of school you only get the Chinese holidays and don’t get to recognize your family holidays from your birth place, example I work on Christmas. I live an hour from the main city and 3 hours from Hong Kong so it can be challenging to travel, I have many steps I must take to get there. Banking sometimes is also a challenge.

What are some of the teaching challenges for English teachers teaching the local people in your area?
I guess trying to make sure you get your message across so they can understand. I teach 4-6 years old children.

Living in Gap ming, China:

Are there any visa or other legal requirements to live in China?
Yes, you talk directly to your company or employer to see what it is they need – they will direct you then go to your local Embassy to obtain your Work visa. Please go ahead and obtain a local or FBI background check which is better. That’s important.

What is the cost of living like in China?
The cost is very cheap 60% less than America, yes so true. But if you live in a bigger city it is a little higher, more things to do so you spend more. But apartments may run about 300 – 500 US dollars per month but most companies have living quarters available to you if you like. The food is very cheap 3 – 10 US dollars.

What are the usual accommodation arrangements and how can you find accommodation?
It depends on the company, for instance I have a 2 bed room single accommodation. Your company may have shared, if you work for a high school you will live on the campus, but of course if you don’t like it you can find your own but you will pay for it.

Other than teaching, what positive aspects are there for living in Gap ming, China?
Friendly people and the ability to save some money.

Other than teaching, what negative aspects are there for living in Gap ming, China?
Not finding certain items you normally use (food), homesickness no family around to go places with.

What advice would you give to someone considering coming to Gap ming, China?
I say again now what you want to do is research and come prepared with items you need and it’s very important if you have someone at home who will mail you the items you need that helps a lot.

What things do you miss most (other than family and friends) from your home country?
The food Italian, pizza, Mexican, turkey etc.

What do you think you will miss most when (or if) you leave China?
The kids, the cozy small town and some friends.

What things would you recommend to new teachers in your area to bring with them from their home country?
They have mostly everything here just not that good of quality sometimes, if they don’t have it you can travel to Hong Kong. I would just say whatever is special to you like lotions and perfume.
