Teaching English in Japan – Sapporo

Teaching English in Sapporo, Japansapporo_japan

Report submitted on 31 Mar, 2016 by Greg Emond.

Teaching English in Sapporo, Japan:

How can teachers find teaching jobs in Sapporo, Japan?
They can find jobs through Gajinpot, and the Hokkaido insider.

The main English teaching jobs available are:
Full time English language school positions, part time English language school positions, agencies (send teachers to different locations), teaching at kindergartens / pre-schools.

What are the minimum teaching requirements?
A university degree From an English speaking country is the minimum required to get a working visa, but additional qualifications, such as TESOL, are preferred.

What teaching requirements would you recommend?
Additional qualifications, such as TESOL or TEFL, are preferred. Native speakers are much more in demand, and 5 years experience opens quite a few more doors.

What are the levels of payment?
250000 yen (roughly 2500US$) a month is the average salary for full timers in Hokkaido.

How many teaching days a week is normal?
5-6 days per week.

How many face-to-face teaching hours a week is normal?
30 hours per week.

What is the normal arrangement for holidays?
2 weeks summer vacation and 2 weeks winter vacation are pretty much the norm.

What advice would you give to someone considering coming to Sapporo, Japan to teach English?

The boss is always right. Always. No matter how wrong you think he is (and you are probably right thinking so), He is right nevertheless, and you must follow the directions he tells you, with a smile to boot. Period.

If you can live with that, then you’ll live quite happily in Japan.

What are the positive aspects of teaching English in Sapporo, Japan?
Japan is a great, and most importantly safe country. It also has a great social system, with good health insurance and very good family support. So it’s a great place to raise your kids.

What are the negative aspects for teaching English in Sapporo, Japan?
Teachers are very recognisable in the streets, so they are expected to always “act” like role models while in public places.

Living in Sapporo, Japan:

Are there any visa or other legal requirements to live in Japan?
Yes, a work visa is necessary.

What is the cost of living like in Japan?
It really depends, but a cheap apartment near downtown is roughly 100000 yen (1000 US$) it gets cheaper if you are willing to commute a lot, but then again, commuting is pretty expensive in Japan. If you live pretty far and need to take the train, it can run up above 3-40000 yen (30-40 US$).

But just a subway pass will cost you between 10000 and 25000 Yen (98-245 US$).

What are the usual accommodation arrangements and how can you find accommodation?
The employers outside the big cities often offer accommodations near their school for pretty cheap. Teaching in a smaller town is a much better decision financially, but it can get a bit boring.

Other than teaching, what positive aspects are there for living in Sapporo, Japan?
Hokkaido is probably the slowest paced place to live in japan, aside from Okinawa.

If you don’t like Tokyo’s frenetic lifestyle, this place is for you.

Other than teaching, what negative aspects are there for living in Sapporo, Japan?
Japanese is a hard language to learn, and you pretty much need to be pretty fluent to live normally in Japan.

Reading is the most difficult challenge, as you need to be able to read hiragana, katakana, and roughly 1000 kanjis to be able to function.

Also, the banking system is a mess, and you need a bank account to work.

What advice would you give to someone considering coming to Sapporo, Japan?
The good time to look for job is in January since the school year begins in march.

What things do you miss most (other than family and friends) from your home country?
The freedom to speak my mind, and act a little silly sometimes is dearly missed.

What do you think you will miss most when (or if) you leave Japan?
The safety inherent to Japan, the courteous service everywhere, and the karaoke booths 🙂

What things would you recommend to new teachers in your area to bring with them from their home country?
DEODORANT! What they have over here is a joke for us stinky foreigners.

and if they are bigger/taller than the average Japanese people, shoes and long sleeve shirts, as they never fit correctly.

About Me and My Work:

My NameGreg Emond

Nationality: Canadian

Students I’ve taught in Japan: Toddlers (2-4 years), pre-school / kindergarten (4-6 years), elementary (6-12 years), junior high school (12-15 years), high school (15-18 years), university, adults.

Where I teachOozora English school, Teine, sapporo. Working here for 9 years.

How I found my current jobs: At the international plaza in Sapporo. But unfortunately, it’s not what it used to be. Less and less people post job ads over there.

My school facilitiesAdequate. The Japanese people don’t want to learn English so they can speak it. They have to learn it to pass a grammar test for their high school exam. Which makes them pretty good readers who can’t say a word.

And that won’t change anytime soon.

But outside the national school system, there are great language schools out there.

Teacher support at my school: Training / workshops, peer support / training.

Teaching English in Toronto, Canada

toronto_canada

Report submitted on 15 March, 2016 by Elvin.

Teaching English in Toronto, Canada:

How can teachers find teaching jobs in Toronto, Canada?
They should take an exam “IELTS” or “TOEFL” and have to provide with certificate ESL(indicating teaching experience). I am student studying at University of Toronto, Computer Science, Second year. I have 11 year experience of English language and would be pleased to teach local students or people willing to learn English.

The main English teaching jobs available are:
Full time English language school positions, part time English language school positions, agencies (send teachers to different locations), teaching at state schools, teaching at private international schools, teaching at colleges / universities, private teaching (not through a school, agency, etc.).

What are the minimum teaching requirements?
Passing the required level of language exam and having expected level of teaching, years of experience.

What teaching requirements would you recommend?
I think the most important thing is having experience with using the language for a long time. In my opinion, language placement exams are not showing exactly the level of English you acquire, it shows the ability to deal with the appropriate exam algorithm. I have a long time experience with English language. I have taken exams such as IELTS and SAT.

What are the levels of payment?
In Canada, for tutoring languages tutors charge at least @20/per hour (approx. US$ 15).

How many teaching days a week is normal?
5 days per week.

How many face-to-face teaching hours a week is normal?
15-25 hours per week.

What is the normal arrangement for holidays?
Holidays are considered seriously in Canada, so if you have tutoring hours that is on holiday or Saint days, the tutor shifts the time and gives an extra hour for the missed tutoring hours.

What advice would you give to someone considering coming to Toronto, Canada to teach English?
Getting job here in Canada it pretty hard, there is a big competition among people. Job hirers hire the best of bests. I would suggest that if someone wishing to teach here should have years of experience using English, job experiences, and appropriate exam results and certificates.

What are the positive aspects of teaching English in Toronto, Canada?
You get to know people of different countries and get opinion of other peoples, exchange with interests. You also improve your English as people studying here are extremely willing to learn.

What are the negative aspects for teaching English in Toronto, Canada?
It would be hard to get job, because sometime the job hirers hire native speakers.

What are some of the teaching challenges for English teachers teaching the local people in your area?
It will sound funny, but here in Toronto there are many Chinese people and it is hard to understand them.

Living in Toronto, Canada:

Are there any visa or other legal requirements to live in Canada?
For getting eligible to work in Canada for a foreigner, VISA is required, then it is checked if the person has the permission to work(Work Permit VISA).

What is the cost of living like in Canada?
It is pretty expensive Country. But the hourly salaries start at $11.75 (approx. US$ 9), so it compromises the price of living here.

What are the usual accommodation arrangements and how can you find accommodation?
You should write an email, or appropriate form of letter for the person, or make a phone call, depends on the situation.

Other than teaching, what positive aspects are there for living in Toronto, Canada?
In my opinion, Canada is a country filled with different opportunities and a big variety of them.

Other than teaching, what negative aspects are there for living in Toronto, Canada?
Certain differences in cultural values, views of Western and Eastern worlds. Given this fact, it is hard to socialise with members of certain communities to certain extend.

What advice would you give to someone considering coming to Toronto, Canada?
You should be independent person and confident, ability to face problems and deal with them and to bring those issues to subtle close.

What things do you miss most (other than family and friends) from your home country?
The most thing I miss is my national cuisine and friends.

What do you think you will miss most when (or if) you leave Toronto, Canada?
It is certain that person leaving his/her current country will miss cultural values, national cuisine and probably relatives and friends.

What things would you recommend to new teachers in your area to bring with them from their home country?
Certainly values and beliefs to diversify the alien culture.

Teaching English in Vietnam – Ho Chi Minh

Teaching English in Ho Chi Minh, Vietnam

hochiminh_vietnam

Report submitted on 7 March, 2016 by Ellie Merrell.

Teaching English in Ho Chi Minh, Vietnam:

How can teachers find teaching jobs in Ho Chi Minh, Vietnam?
I work for a company called AMA (American Academy) which is a learning center for after school learning. The company is joined with a second company called GELA which gives me weekly hours in public schools around the city. If you go to the center in person they will ask for your domuments (cerTESOL certificate and degree) then they will give you an interview and ask you to do a demonstration lesson.

The main English teaching jobs available are:
Full time English language school positions, part time English language school positions, agencies (send teachers to different locations), teaching at kindergartens / pre-schools, teaching at state schools.

What are the minimum teaching requirements?
My company asked for at least a TEFL certificate (or anything above), a bachelors degree and two references (not necessarily from a teaching job). Also they are quite strict on you being a native speaker.

What teaching requirements would you recommend?
I think having at least a TEFL is very important. Even if it is an online TEFL you have a base idea of how to create lesson plans, manage a class and a variety of games and activities already established.

What are the levels of payment?
The rate is different depending on what you are teaching. For public schools I get paid 395,000VND (US$17 per hour), for private kindergarten I get 440,000VND (US$20 per hour) and working in the center ranges between 310,000VND (US$13) –  375,00VND (US$16.80).

How many teaching days a week is normal?
6 days per week

How many face-to-face teaching hours a week is normal?
20 hours per week

What is the normal arrangement for holidays?
I have no holiday pay, but if you give them a month or two notice you need time off they are very accommodating. No christmas holiday but they have two weeks off for Tet which is usually the first two weeks of February.

What advice would you give to someone considering coming to Ho Chi Minh, Vietnam to teach English?
Be prepared to tech any level at any age. In one week I have kindergarten from 2-5 years old, primary school, sometimes high school, all the way trough to university students and people working.

What are the positive aspects of teaching English in Ho Chi Minh, Vietnam?
The students are usually very enthusiastic about learning and you can have real fun with them. Also there is such a lot of foreigners teaching english that their is a lot of support and advice if you need it.

What are the negative aspects for teaching English in Ho Chi Minh, Vietnam? The biggest negative is the language difference. Vietnamese is extremely difficult to learn. When teaching students with a latin or germanic based language you can really pick up the language easily and understand some of what the students are saying in their native tongue. This is almost impossible in Vietnam which can be difficult with the younger students.

What are some of the teaching challenges for English teachers teaching the local people in your area?
The locals are not so much bothered about having english.

Living in Ho Chi Minh, Vietnam:

Are there any visa or other legal requirements to live in Vietnam?
I have just been working on a tourist visa which is popular for people who don’t plan on being here for longer than a year or so. Other teachers have business visas which their company provides for them.

What is the cost of living like in Ho Chi Minh, Vietnam?
The cost of living is extremely cheap! Depending on where you want to live you can pay from US$200 – US$400 a month for rent. You can eat breakfast, lunch and dinner out (with a sneaky beer or two) for less than US$5.

What are the usual accommodation arrangements and how can you find accommodation?
There are apartments all over the place, being advertised everywhere. We live in a guesthouse to stay more central to travel for work which is full of teachers and travellers.

Other than teaching, what positive aspects are there for living in Ho Chi Minh, Vietnam?
Vietnamese people are usually very friendly and helpful even with such a big language barrier. Very hospitable when it comes to food and curious when it comes to your appearance.

Other than teaching, what negative aspects are there for living in Ho Chi Minh, Vietnam?
Vietnam has two seasons; dry and rainy. Between May and November it is very rainy and difficult to travel around the city. Between November and April their is almost no rain but the temperature will sometimes reach 37 degrees with very high humidity which can be exhausting to work in.

What advice would you give to someone considering coming to Ho Chi Minh, Vietnam?
Bring a good rain jacket, light and airy clothing and be ready to drive a scooter or motorbike there is no other way to travel round so freely for work.

What things do you miss most (other than family and friends) from your home country?
The pub and also cold days!

What do you think you will miss most when (or if) you leave Vietnam?
I will miss working with such young students (kindergarten) which i have never had the chance to do before. Also Banh mi, which is a vietnamese sandwich.

What things would you recommend to new teachers in your area to bring with them from their home country?
If you’re English like me, tea bags! You can find a huge amount of american products around H Chi Minh City (crisps, chocolate, peanut butter etc) but not so much British stuff. Cheese is very expensive and hard to find!

Teaching English in China – Qijiang

Teaching English in Qijiang, China

qijiang_china

Report submitted on 20 Feb, 2016 by Dr. Laurence J. MacDonald

Teaching English in Qijiang, China:

How can teachers find teaching jobs in Qijiang, China?
Its becoming increasingly more difficult with the new policies of the CCP. However, I have several contacts as well. If my school increases its enrollment, I too will be looking for a foreign teacher to teach English as a second language.

The main English teaching jobs available are:
Full time English language school positions, part time English language school positions, agencies (send teachers to different locations), teaching at state schools, teaching at private international schools, teaching at colleges / universities, teaching at companies.

What are the minimum teaching requirements?
I hold a PhD abd, but have never required it even when I taught at University. Many high schools and middle schools require a teaching degree and B.A. in education. However some, in very small villages will take any foreign language speaker with TEFL, and some with nothing.

What teaching requirements would you recommend?
I’m a traditionalist, and would hope that most individuals seeking to teach in foreign countries have at least a degree in education or professional courses in TEFL. They should also be from a native English speaking country, without a strong accent. i.e. Canada, US, UK, Australia, NZ, I have heard teachers before from countries such as South Africa, India and the Philippines, where they speak English, teach, however, their accent is so strong, the students pick it up and this could lead to problems in the future.

What are the levels of payment?
Usually, most enterprises in the business of teaching English pay on a monthly salary basis. Depending where you are, the pay can be anywhere from 4,000 rmb(630.00 US$) to 10,000rmb..(approx. 1500.00 US$). Some provide housing some don’t. Many Middle Schools and High schools offer meals. The only hourly rate here is for private teaching. I command 200 rmb(35.00 US$) per hour.

How many teaching days a week is normal?
5-6 days per week.

How many face-to-face teaching hours a week is normal?
4-5 hours per week.

What is the normal arrangement for holidays?
The days and hours I have stipulated depend on where you are teaching. e.g. pvt English schools demand more of your time as they pay much more. High schools and middle schools pay less and try to demand more. I have been here several years now, and still have never understood how they set the holidays here. In China, you only borrow the holiday but must pay it back by teaching weekends. The only solid holiday is Chinese New Year and Spring Festival. If you teach in the public school sector, you will have off the summer but without salary.

What advice would you give to someone considering coming to Qijiang, China to teach English?
Pick up some basic language skills, be tolerant of some of the culture, be ready to relinquish many of your freedoms, ie. Facebook, You Tube, impartial news broadcasting. Spitting, smoking in public places, very poor drivers, very few driving rules. Further, many Chinese teachers resent foreign teachers because they seem to get more perks and higher pay but teach less hours. Remember, in China its what is NOT said that is important.

What are the positive aspects of teaching English in Qijiang, China?
I love the people, but mostly the kids, I am a former professional basketball coach from Canada and do many clinics with young kids for free here in my city. China is a provocatively interesting country and presently, there are many changes taking place. I am over 70 and am present to witness these changes.

What are the negative aspects for teaching English in Qijiang, China?
I think if you read my previous answers, you will see the negatives of teaching here.

What are some of the teaching challenges for English teachers teaching the local people in your area?
The most obvious is not knowing the language. In my small school, I hire an English speaking Chinese teacher to translate my words. However, insure you hire a good one because many things you say may get messed up in translation. Its is always good to learn some of the language. I would be classified as an upper beginner. Other challenges are of course the parents. The one child policy has populated the country with spoiled kids with a sense of entitlement. As China gets richer, you will now have to deal with spoiled rich kids.

Living in Qijiang, China:

Are there any visa or other legal requirements to live in China?
Absolutely, to teach here, you must have a valid Z visa which allows you to work. However, they want you to get it in your own country but you must have a valid contract in order to secure one. Best bet, secure a position, get them to send you a contract, take this to the Chinese Embassy in your country and apply for a visa. NB if you acquire a Z visa (working visa), it will be registered to the company that offered you the contract and can only be used for that company or school. You can also acquire a 30 day visitor visa which could give you time enough to scout out a job, if not most times it can be extended.

What is the cost of living like in China?
Much much cheaper here than in the west. I will only site what I pay for here. Qijiang is a city of approx 1 million. My wife and I go out to dinner with the approximate cost being around 50-60 rmb (9.00 US$) that is for local dishes, ie. hot pot, meat dishes and veggies etc. However, many foreign restaurants and hotels are much pricier. I can buy a quart bottle of beer in a store for 3rmb (less than 1.00 US$) and if eating out it ranges from 5-10 rmb (just a little over 1.00 US$). Bars can be costly, 20.00 rmb (2.50 US) for a small bottle of local beer, or 30.00 rmb (4.50 US$) for imported beer. Beware of the alcohol here, its called Bi Jo made from rice, tastes horrible, and ranges in alc. volume from 50% to 61%. Nasty stuff.

What are the usual accommodation arrangements and how can you find accommodation?
The company or school you work for will usually aid you in finding accommodation. Here I own a home, but rent my school space. The rent is 1300 rmn (200 US$) per month. For that I get three bedrooms, two bathrooms, but in an older building. My house cost us 2000 rmb (308 US$) per M2. The houses here are not like in Canada and the States. All are high rises you rarely see individual housing on a piece of property except in the country and on farms.

Other than teaching, what positive aspects are there for living in Qijiang, China?
I dislike the winters here, they are cold dull and grey with the sun showing about 10% of the time. However, the summer is extremely hot daily in the mid to high 30’s. As I love to travel to places of interest, from here it is very easy. Thailand, Vietnam, the Philippines, are easy and cheap to get to. I don’t drive here as I am afraid to do so. but the cost of transportation is very cheap. Taxis begin at 3.00 transportation (0.40 US$) and buses are 1.00 rmb (0.15 US$).

What things do you miss most (other than family and friends) from your home country?
Mostly I miss the food. Here in Sichuan Province, the food is so spicy I can hardly eat it. Also I miss being able to add to a conversation because of my limited language skills, that is difficult. Also I must be careful what I say here but I miss the freedom of speech, being able to criticise government policy openly. But most of all I miss Christmas, here its abused hostile and noisy.

What do you think you will miss most when (or if) you leave China?
I will die here, my father was with the Flying Tigers who fought in China during the second world war (1943), he was killed in Chongqing in 1943. I came here initially to coach but also to find out what the attraction was for him. A Canadian Indian fighting against Japanese aggression……for what reason?

What things would you recommend to new teachers in your area to bring with them from their home country?
Other than the obvious, food items which you can’t get here but cannot bring in. You will need electrical socket converters as the plugs here are quite different than in the west. If you are a large person like me, clothing to fit. The sizes here are different I wear XXL in China but L to XL in the west. Get a good VPN on your computer as you are not allowed Facebook or YouTube bring enough money to live on until you find a position. I would recommend enough for six months. This all in US money….Housing for six months 6X300 US$ + 1800 US$, FOOD, 6 x400 US$ (for this amount you will eat well, Figure on bringing about 5-6000 US$ unless you have a guaranteed job here.

Any other comments (about teaching or living in your country)?
Although, in some of my answers I have painted a somewhat negative view of teaching here, it is not that bad. Once you get used to the culture, learn some of the language, meet new Chinese friends, things are quite normal and satisfying. My suggestion is don’t take things too seriously, go with the flow, don’t try to change things and stay away from the forbidden T’s, Taiwan, Tibet and Tienanmen Square, you will be fine. In public do not question the government or its leaders.

Students I’ve taught in China: Toddlers (2-4 years), pre-school / kindergarten (4-6 years), elementary (6-12 years), junior high school (12-15 years), high school (15-18 years), university, adults, business.

Where I teach: Interpersonal TS, Qijiang. Working here for 5 years.  I also teach private lessons and volunteer with tourism board to edit publications

H.I.G.H.E.R. International English Academy, Qijiang.  Working for 7 years.

How I found my current jobs: This is my company. As stated earlier, I began coaching here in the CBA, however, once I turned 65, I was no longer eligible to gain a Z visa as they don’t allow you to work past 65. My wife is the Head Mistress of our school, I am merely a consultant that does not get paid.

My school facilities: Inadequate. Because the facilities, classrooms, play areas ARE mostly inadequate. It is getting much better however, when I began teaching here in the high school system, it was like teaching in Tom Browns School Days. In the winter, there is no heat in the classrooms so you teach with all your winter clothing on such as a warm coat and gloves. In the early summer, no air and it is very HOT.

Teacher support at my school: Teacher evaluations, none.
