Teaching English in Yuchi, Nantou, Taiwan:
How can teachers find teaching jobs in Taiwan?
www.tealit.com.
The main English teaching jobs available are:
Full time English language school positions, teaching at state schools, teaching at private international schools.
What are the minimum teaching requirements?
A teaching certificate.
What teaching requirements would you recommend?
Westerner – native English speakers – are always in demand. There are no other requirements except for a valid teaching certificate.
What are the levels of payment?
Foreign teachers are paid double the minimum wage is for Taiwan workers. The pay is not great in U.S. dollars, but its a lot of money in Taiwan dollars. Both the cost of living and the food are very inexpensive, so your money goes along way. You can probably save a good amount to take back home, as well.
How many face-to-face teaching hours a week is normal?
20 classes per week is the minimum for full time 5 days per week.
What is the normal arrangement for holidays?
Teachers do not get U.S. off on holidays such as Christmas or Thanksgiving, so expect to teach on Christmas day. Teachers have off for Chinese New Year and other Taiwan holidays. Teachers get summers off to go home or travel.
What advice would you give to someone considering coming to Taiwan to teach English?
The language barrier can be significant and the teaching culture is totally different. Learn just a few Chinese words and about the culture and you’ll be fine. If you are flexible and able to adapt, you’ll do great.
What are the positive aspects of teaching English in Yuchi, Nantou, Taiwan?
The kids will love you! Experiencing a new culture is worth it.
What are the negative aspects for teaching English in Yuchi, Nantou, Taiwan?
They don’t teach for mastery, the school system is set up to help students pass the test. The students are not taught any critical thinking skills and they see no problem with cheating, sharing papers, or copying each others papers, which is very disturbing to a Western teacher. If you know that coming in, you’ll have a better understanding of what you’ll find when you get here. Teachers in Asia are expected to spoon feed the kids information and they are just supposed to memorize it. This goes against Western teaching and can be frustrating, as Western teachers expect feedback and dialogue, so its hard to get the kids to speak out loud in class, as they may lose face if they get it wrong.
What are some of the teaching challenges for English teachers teaching the local people in your area?
Language barrier. Western vs Eastern teaching styles.
