How can teachers find teaching jobs in Port Vila, Vanuatu?
By looking for schools in Vanuatu especially international schools where they put all their vacancies on their web page, for example, Port vila international school or the French international school.

The main English teaching jobs available are:
Full time English language school positions, teaching at private international schools, teaching at colleges / universities

What are the minimum teaching requirements?
Degree or master in Education.

What teaching requirements would you recommend?
I’d recommend qualification and experience especially in the international schools.

What are the levels of payment?
The levels of payments in an hour is quite different between the local and international schools. In the international school, the rate is higher than the one in the local schools.

How many teaching days a week is normal?
5 days of teaching in a week is normal days per week.

How many face-to-face teaching hours a week is normal?
27 hours a week hours per week.

What is the normal arrangement for holidays?
The international schools have four terms in a year while the locals only have two.

What advice would you give to someone considering coming to Port Vila, Vanuatu to teach English?
You have to have a good level of English.

What are the positive aspects of teaching English in Port Vila, Vanuatu?
Vanuatu is a bilingual country with more than 100 dialects, people speak both English and French, so children can easily adapt to any new languages in the classroom especially English or French.

What are the negative aspects for teaching English in Port Vila, Vanuatu?
English is a second language, most of the people grew up in their home speaking their own mother tongues and so learning a new language can be a challenge.

What are some of the teaching challenges for English teachers teaching the local people in your area?
Language is the barrier when it comes to teaching English especially in the islands.

Are there any visa or other legal requirements to live in Vanuatu?
Yes and the schools take care of that.

What is the cost of living like in Vanuatu?
The cost of living here is high, food in the supermarkets are very expensive, food from the local market is cheaper, renting an apartment is also costly.

What are the usual accommodation arrangements and how can you find accommodation?
You can find accommodation online.

Other than teaching, what positive aspects are there for living in Port Vila, Vanuatu?
Less pollution and eating locally is very healthy than processed food in the supermarket and in addition we are covid free.

Other than teaching, what negative aspects are there for living in Port Vila, Vanuatu?
Medical insurance, we have a lot of earthquakes and cyclones.

What advice would you give to someone considering coming to Port Vila, Vanuatu?
They have to consider both the positive and negative sides of living here.

What things do you miss most (other than family and friends) from your home country?
Food.

What do you think you will miss most when (or if) you leave Vanuatu?
Friendliness of the people.

What things would you recommend to new teachers in your area to bring with them from their home country?
Just themselves.
