What teaching requirements would you recommend?
Come with a degree in education or English. Level of English must be high if want to teach grades 7-12.
What are the levels of payment?
Between 50 -120 New Shekels an hour.
How many teaching days a week is normal?
3 days per week
How many face-to-face teaching hours a week is normal?
15-20 hours per week.
What is the normal arrangement for holidays?
Depends on number of years teaching experience- 2-4 weeks a year.
What advice would you give to someone considering coming to Jerusalem, Israel to teach English?
Speak to an established teacher first.
What are the positive aspects of teaching English in Jerusalem, Israel?
All parents want their kids to learn English. The end of school matriculation exams demand a minimum level of English to pass.
What are the negative aspects for teaching English in Jerusalem, Israel?
Need a work permit.
What are some of the teaching challenges for English teachers teaching the local people in your area?
Teaching reading and writing. The local language is Hebrew which uses a different alphabet.
Living in Jerusalem, Israel:
Are there any visa or other legal requirements to live in Israel?
You need a permanent visa to be allowed to work in the country.
What is the cost of living like in Israel?
Reasonable. Meat is expensive. People eat a lot of chicken.
What are the usual accommodation arrangements and how can you find accommodation?
Rental, Internet, agencies.
Other than teaching, what positive aspects are there for living in Jerusalem, Israel?
This the Holyland. It is a country full of history and culture. It encourages diversity. People from all over the world come to live, study and tour in Israel.
Other than teaching, what negative aspects are there for living in Jerusalem, Israel?
There are external enemies dedicated to destroy and kill as many Jews (the majority of the population) as possible.
What advice would you give to someone considering coming to your Jerusalem, Israel?
Find someone who lives here and talk in depth with them.
What things do you miss most (other than family and friends) from your home country?
West End theaters.
What do you think you will miss most when (or if) you leave Jerusalem, Israel?
The history, the spiritual atmosphere, the feeling of national and personal home.
What things would you recommend to new teachers in your area to bring with them from their home country?
Israel is a modern country and it is possible to buy anything in the shops or via the internet. There is nothing special that is lacking. There is a significant difference in daily temperature in the winter and summer. Bring winter and summer clothes.
If the country is faced with war and murderous enemies at the borders, is this a frightening experience?
It is a concern. However, the country is experienced and there are bomb shelters at every corner. Ordinary civilians carry weapons and there are police and armed soldiers in abundance.
Any other comments (about teaching or living in Israel)?
Teaching lower grades is a challenge because of the different alphabet and minimal input from parents at home.
The higher grades (8-12) want to learn and therefore it is a Is the pleasure to teach them.
