2. The Other Way
It's possible to print directly from the ESL
kidstuff website (File / Print) but using this method is difficult to set the
size of the image to fit the card you are printing on. It's far easier to
save the image and then use your word processor to print the picture to fit your
card perfectly. Here's how to with Microsoft Word:
1. In eslkidstuff.com locate the image you
want to use.
2. Save the image to your hard drive (see here
for details).
3. Open your flashcard template file in your
word processing program (see here
for details on making a template).
4. Click: Insert / Picture / From File...
(from the tool bar menu).
5. Select the folder you saved the image to
and then double-click the image file.
6. Now you should see the picture in your
template. You can re-size it if needed by clicking on the picture and
then clicking and dragging the handles.
7. To print: from the tool bar select File /
Print. In the Print Range area at the prompt for "Pages"
type "1". Put a card in your printer and then click
"OK".How

Click your right mouse button over the image you want to
save. From the menu list, left click on "Save Picture As..." or
"Save Image As...". Choose a folder to save the image in and
rename the file if required (it is probably a good idea to create a new folder
to save your images to).
How
do I make a Flashcard Template? [Back
to printing instructions]
A Flashcard template makes printing pictures
onto card quick and easy. It sets up a page that is the perfect size for
printing pictures onto card. Here's how to with Microsoft Word:
- Open a blank page in Word
- We need to set the rule bars to the correct
size for the card you are going to print on (this may take a little fiddling
with, but once set right can be used over and over again). To help do
this we need to insert an image, preferably one you have saved to your hard
disk from eslkidstuff.com. In the tool bar menu select: Insert /
Picture / From File... Select the folder you saved the image to and
then double-click the image file. You should now see the picture in
the Word document. Center justify the picture.
- Look at the rulers at the top and the
left-hand side of the page. The ends of the ruler bars should be grey
and the rest white. The white section shows the print area for the
page. By resizing these you can control the size of the printed
page. By clicking on the line where the white area and gray area meet
and holding down the mouse button you can adjust the size of the print
area. You need to move both the top and side rulers inwards so to make
the print page smaller. The number you set it to depends on the size
of the card you are going to print on. For a postcard try the
following size: for the top rule bar reset the left grey area to finish on
the 2nd dot (so it is much shorter than before). The white area length
should also be shortened so that the area is from 0" to
3.5". For the side rule bar: resize the top grey area to be
1". Then resize the white area inwards to be 3.5" long.
- If necessary, resize the picture to fit
inside the template area on Page 1 of this document (click the image and
then drag the handles inwards).
- Do a demo print. Put a card in your
printer and then select File /
Print. In the Print Range area at the prompt for "Pages"
type "1". Put a card in your printer and then click
"OK" (put the card in long ways
i.e. portrait)
- If the picture is too big or too small then
resize the rule bars and print again. Continue to do this until you
get a good size for your card.
- Finally save this document (maybe name this
file "Flashcard Template"). Now, you can insert any picture
and print it off within seconds.
